Include the workflow you were using, the error message, and the time it happened. Share a sanitized result report if it helps explain the problem. Remove customer data and credentials before sending files.

Start with a preview

  1. Open the app in your source store and export the required definitions and metaobject types. Include linked types.
  2. Open the app in the destination store. Upload the JSON, validate it, and import missing metaobject definitions.
  3. Preview entry import. Choose Skip, Update, or Copy, then import and review the report.
  4. For metafield definition imports, create referenced metaobject definitions first.

Use exports from stores you own or are authorized to manage.

Common questions

How do I install or reopen the app?

If the app is already installed, open Shopify admin, choose your store, and go to Apps → Metafield IMEX. The app never needs you to type a shop domain into an installation form.

Does this migrate metafield values on products or customers?

No. Metafield migration covers definitions: names, types, validations, and supported settings. Metaobject migration includes both definitions and entries. Product, collection, customer, and order resources are not created or copied.

Which references can be migrated?

Single and list references to images, products, collections, and metaobjects are supported. Products and collections must already exist with matching handles. Include linked metaobject types in the export. Populated unsupported references, such as variants or generic files, produce an error.

What happens to existing entries?

Skip preserves them. Update requires the overwrite checkbox and modifies imported fields. Copy creates a unique handle and links copied metaobjects to their new copies where applicable. Repeating Copy creates additional copies.

Why did an import only partly complete?

Imports can partially succeed. Review the report before retrying. Missing references, incompatible fields, permissions, or image processing can prevent an entry from completing. Optional-link errors can leave a saved entry whose links still need attention.

What size files are supported?

JSON uploads are limited to 20 MB. For longer migrations, use smaller exports and keep the page open until a result appears.

How is my data handled?

Read the privacy notice for information about sessions, migration files, and data requests. Imported data stored in Shopify remains under the merchant’s control.
